I GET YOUR FRUSTRATION!
Do you feel like you have tried it all when it comes to weight loss? That no matter what you do that you either fail at the newest diet or see little to no results from all your hard work? I understand your pain because I was there chasing one diet to the next till I finally found the answer.
Vaseline on My Toast
No, Vaseline on my toast was not the answer :).
Growing up I had a very health conscious mother. You might be thinking “well that’s great how lucky for you”, not so much. Unfortunately her health conscious behaviour stemmed from a severe eating disorder. My mom constantly demonized food, especially things like fat, saying things like “why don’t you put a little more Vaseline on your toast” (meaning butter). It was drilled into my head that fat was the devil, and whole grain carbohydrates were the ultimate food for health and weight management.
I loved the carbs like so many of us do and was a severe “carb addict” in high school. I had a terrible time with overeating and as high school wore on I began to turn to bulimia as an answer to my overeating. I spent years making myself throw up in hopes that I would lose weight. From there I spent the next 10 years trying everything from excessive exercise, low fat, high carb, Atkins, vegetarianism, vegan, portion control, HCG so on and so forth to lose weight. I was never severely over weight but I obsessed about it like I was and was never happy with my body. I was frustrated that it seemed no matter how well I ate or followed a program I still wasn’t skinny.
The Truth Set Me Free
I finally realized that the truth behind this struggle is that there’s no master diet solution and every-body is different! I had to find the optimal way of eating for my body and also look further than food to see if there were other factors in my weight gain. Well after a lot of research and some trial and error I found my personal weight loss code.
In a nut shell I began eating a Paleo style diet, I had to get my hormones in balance, keep my stress levels low, and work on past issues; learning to love who I was and quit trying to be someone I wasn’t (this was not an easy road). That is what worked for me and has continued to work for me
Find Your Personal Weight Loss Code
I am here to help you figure out your own personal weight loss code and hopefully change your beliefs about weight loss and health. If you feel that you have tried it all and still can’t lose the weight then it`s time to look beyond exercise and diet.
In my experience working with clients and doing endless research I have narrowed it down to four of the most common reasons for women’s weight loss resistance besides food and exercise. The first one is:
Mood swings, water retention, PMS, menopause, thinning hair, insomnia, anxiety, depression, weight around the middle a.k.a. muffin top, hot flashes, and of course inability to lose weight are some of the signs that you could have hormone imbalance.
In this day and age are hormones are being put through the ringer! Everything from plastic items, house hold cleaning products, pesticides, nutrient deficiencies, birth control pills, leaky gut, pregnancy, sugar and much more are constantly putting a stress on our hormones. When our hormones are out of balance everything is out of balance including your weight!
What can you do about it?
Have your hormones checked! The preferable method is saliva testing or urine testing, not blood testing. The best time of the month to take the test, if you are a menstruating woman, is the 21st day of your cycle. For non-menstruating women you can take the test anytime. If you’re unsure if you have hormone imbalances book a free 15 minute consult and I will be happy to help you.
2. Food Sensitivities
Bad digestion, abdominal pains, acid reflux, chronic aches and pains, bloated, constipation and/or diarrhea, IBS, skin rashes are some of the signs that you could have food sensitivities which could also be causing your weight loss resistance.
Food sensitivities are extremely common now days and are different then a food allergy. A food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body and can be fatal in extreme cases. Food sensitivities also involve a type of immune reaction but one that acts more slowly than an allergic response. Whereas allergic reactions are swift, food sensitivity symptoms don’t appear until several hours or even days later. Research suggests that how well our metabolism functions is a key factor in weight loss or gain, and some of the foods that are most likely to trigger intolerance are known to disrupt our metabolism. Food sensitivities can create a host of symptoms including inflammation, water retention and digestive problems all major causes of weight loss resistance.
What can you do about it?
Remove the offending foods for at least 4 weeks, the 7 foods most likely to cause food intolerances are dairy, gluten, eggs, soy, peanuts, corn, sugar and artificial sweeteners. At the end of the 4 weeks add each one back in one at a time and monitor your response. If symptoms return including weight gain take them out of your diet indefinitely.
3. Your so called “healthy foods” aren’t so healthy.
Do you eat any of the following foods on a regular basis: margarine, vegetable oil, whole wheat bread and or pasta, brown rice, legumes, oats, artificial sweeteners like Splenda or equal, no fat artificially sweetened yogurt, soy products, milk, and low fat cheese? These have all been touted as “healthy” foods but unfortunately can be damaging to your health and weight. They can be the host of different issues such as blood sugar spikes, leaky gut, nutrient deficiencies and inflammation all of which can contribute to weight gain and weight loss resistance.
What can you do about it?
Eliminate these foods from your diet and see if they help you to lose weight. Margarine, gluten, artificial sweeteners should, in my opinion and the opinion of many other health professionals, be completely avoided because of their damaging effects on health.
Do you feel wired but tired, over scheduled and like you can’t keep up? Do you have insomnia, anxiety, racing thoughts, extra weight on your stomach and cravings for fat and salt? These could be signs that you are too stressed which could be causing weight loss resistance. Stress raises the hormone cortisol, which is your fight or flight hormone. When your cortisol levels remain high for a long period of time it signals to your body to store fat, cortisol not only will store your fat but will also increase insulin levels and insulin is the fat storage hormone. To make matters worse high cortisol increases blood sugar to help get you through the stressful situations, but high blood sugar = increased sugar cravings. You can read more about the effects of cortisol on your weight here.
What can you do about this?
Manage your stress, start taking time for yourself, higher a house keeper, spend more time outdoors, get a massage, have a daily meditation practice, do yoga or anything else that feeds you and doesn’t take away your energy but gives it to you.
