First A Few Quick Facts About Toxins The world has become a toxic place and that has had a devastating impact on our bodies especially our liver. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization, analyzed the toxic “body burden” of Americans. The researchers tested for 525 toxins and found 455 different toxins in their research subjects. On average, participants’ bodies contained 60 toxins that could be detrimental to the stomach or intestines, 57 that could affect the health of the reproductive system and 52 that could affect the brain and nervous system.
The liver acts as a filter to remove these toxins (like medications and alcohol) and nutrient byproducts. It aids in digestion by producing bile to help break down fat and absorb fat- and water-soluble vitamins and minerals; and it plays a part in regulating glucose, insulin, estrogen, testosterone, immunity, and nutrient absorption and removal. Phew that is a lot of jobs that your liver has to do!
Let's take a look at each of these and how they can relate to helping you lose weight.
Digestion
- the liver produces bile, abnormalities in bile production can lead to gallstones, intolerance to fatty foods and alcohol, abdominal bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and stomach pain. Poor digestion can lead to inflammation poor nutrient absorbency both in which cause weight gain.Regulating Glucose and Insulin
- a dysfunctional liver can lead to unstable blood sugar levels, the precursor for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.Hormones
- the liver is a key regulator of hormones, a dysfunctional liver can result in abnormal levels of estrogen and testosterone (male/female hormones). An imbalance of these hormones can lead to weight gain. Also, failure of the liver to regulate thyroid hormones and insulin results in hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.Immunity
- When the liver is overtaxed, the immune system cannot efficiently handle the toxic load. Symptoms include allergies, food intolerances and chemical sensitivities, skin rashes and inflammations, and increased risk of autoimmune diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia (which in and of themselves create...you guessed it, weight gain!)Nutrient malabsorption
When the liver is functioning sub-optimally, it cannot convert nutrients to their bio-available forms. Therefore, many nutrients pass through the body without being absorbed. Without proper nutrients food craving will increase, fatigue will set in and your metabolism will slow.As you can see the liver has a lot to do with your weight and your health!
